The Tafo Circuit Court in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, has remanded Beauty Alakwe, a 36-year-old sex worker, into prison custody after she was charged with assault and causing harm to her nine-year-old sister, Ruth Wisdom. The disturbing case, which has sparked outrage, involves allegations of the accused pouring hot water on the child and inflicting knife wounds following an incident where the young girl defecated in their shared room at Duase, a suburb in the Kumasi Metropolis.
According to investigations, the abuse—confirmed by co-tenants—has been ongoing since the victim was brought from Nigeria to live with Alakwe. The latest attack on November 22, 2025, prompted neighbours to intervene, rushing Ruth to Manhyia Hospital after finding her with severe injuries. Medical staff noted multiple old bruises, pointing to a pattern of prolonged mistreatment. The child is now under the care of Social Welfare Officers in Kwabre East, with her treatment and well-being overseen by authorities.
The ordeal came to light after a Citi News report led the Minister for Gender and Social Protection, Naa MoMo Lartey, to direct immediate intervention. Co-tenants revealed Alakwe often locks the victim and her own child indoors overnight while she works, with no toilet access forcing the girls to use a public facility a situation that ends in brutal beatings when accidents happen.
In Tuesday’s (November 25, 2025) court hearing, Alakwe requested legal aid, which was granted. Presiding over the case, His Honour Festus Fovi Nukunu initially ordered police custody but later shifted her remand to prison, citing inadequate facilities at Kenyasi Police cells. Alakwe is set to reappear in court on December 12, 2025.
The case underscores concerns about child protection and abuse in vulnerable households. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact local welfare services as investigations continue.
