Tatale-Sanguli District Assembly Distributes 810 Dual Desks To Basic Schools To Ease Furniture Deficit

The Tatale-Sanguli District Assembly in the Northern Region has distributed 810 dual desks to basic schools across the district in a major intervention aimed at addressing the persistent shortage of classroom furniture and improving teaching and learning conditions.

The initiative, led by District Chief Executive, Hon. Mary Tagba, was funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund and forms part of the Assembly’s broader strategy to upgrade educational infrastructure in the district.

Speaking during the presentation, Hon. Tagba said the desks were procured specifically for schools experiencing acute shortages of desks and other essential classroom facilities.

“The Assembly is determined to ensure that no child in the district is compelled to sit on the floor or share inadequate furniture during lessons due to a lack of desks,” she stated.

She explained that adequate furniture is a critical component of quality education, as it helps create a comfortable, orderly and conducive classroom environment for both teachers and learners.

According to the DCE, the Assembly had originally planned to distribute 910 pieces of furniture to beneficiary schools in this phase.

However, she said delays by the contractor responsible for producing the furniture meant that only 810 pieces were ready for the initial rollout.

Hon. Tagba assured education authorities and beneficiary schools that the remaining 100 desks will be completed by next week and subsequently handed over to the District Education Directorate for onward distribution.

“This intervention is a demonstration of the Assembly’s commitment to improving educational infrastructure and ensuring that pupils have access to the basic facilities required for effective learning,” she added.

The DCE acknowledged previous efforts to reduce the furniture deficit in Tatale-Sanguli, particularly an intervention by the Member of Parliament for the area who, she said, distributed 910 pieces of furniture to schools last year.

She noted that the combined efforts of the District Assembly, the MP, the Ghana Education Service and other stakeholders will be crucial in accelerating efforts to completely eliminate the furniture deficit across the district.

Hon. Tagba also expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for what she described as his commitment to improving conditions in schools and ensuring that pupils have access to essential learning facilities.

“Providing pupils with appropriate tables and chairs is crucial to making teaching and learning more effective, particularly in communities where schools continue to face infrastructure challenges,” she said.

The DCE used the occasion to appeal to school authorities, teachers, parents and community members to take proper care of the new furniture and ensure its longevity.

She stressed that the provision and preservation of school furniture is a collective responsibility and urged beneficiary schools to ensure the desks are used strictly for their intended purpose for the benefit of present and future generations.

Receiving the furniture on behalf of beneficiary schools, the Tatale-Sanguli District Director of Education, Mr. Zakaria Masahudu, expressed gratitude to the DCE, the District Assembly and the President for the swift intervention.

Mr. Masahudu said the Education Directorate appreciated the Assembly’s efforts to address the furniture challenge and assured that the items would be distributed to the designated schools without delay.

He added that the intervention will contribute significantly to improving classroom conditions and support both teachers and pupils in their daily academic work.

The distribution of the 810 dual desks is expected to bring immediate relief to beneficiary schools, while the Assembly works to secure the outstanding 100 pieces and address other educational infrastructure needs across Tatale-Sanguli.

The initiative further underscores the importance of collaboration among the District Assembly, Education Directorate, political leaders, school authorities and communities in creating an enabling environment for quality education in the district.
