Government Launches Green City Housing Project at Dedesua as Long-Term Investment in Ghana’s Future

The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has described the newly launched Green City Housing Project in Dedesua in the Bosomtwe District, as a strategic national investment designed to secure decent and sustainable housing for generations to come.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the project, Mr. Adjei said the initiative reflects a deliberate shift from short-term political considerations toward a long-term vision for affordable and resilient housing delivery in Ghana.

“This is not about building for the next electoral cycle. It is about building for generations yet unborn,” the Minister stated, noting that the project is anchored on the principles of resilience, vision, and legacy.

Mr. Adjei explained that the Green City Project goes beyond the number of housing units to be delivered. Its true measure, he said, will lie in the lives transformed, the communities created, and the economic opportunities unlocked for future Ghanaians.

He emphasized that sustainability is now central to government’s housing agenda, pointing out that the project has been designed to respond to global environmental and climate challenges.

The development aligns with Ghana’s commitment to integrating green building principles into national housing policy, a position Mr. Adjei reaffirmed at the Ghana Green Building Summit in 2025.

With climate projections indicating that millions of Ghanaians could face extreme heat conditions in the coming decades, the Minister underscored the urgency of adopting responsible construction practices.

“The project represents a different path one that delivers housing responsibly, sustainably, and with the future in mind,” he said.

Acknowledging the country’s persistent housing deficit, Mr. Adjei noted that demand continues to outstrip supply, leaving many families in overcrowded and inadequate conditions. He said the Green City Project demonstrates government’s determination to change the housing narrative through large-scale, well-planned interventions.

The Minister commended the Board and Management of the State Housing Company Limited for their resilience and vision in advancing the project, describing it as both a social and economic investment.

Mr. Adjei paid tribute to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his personal commitment and support, saying his involvement has provided inspiration and direction for the initiative. He also acknowledged President John Dramani Mahama for prioritizing housing as a key pillar of Ghana’s development agenda.

The Minister assured investors and development partners that Ghana remains open for large-scale housing partnerships, citing rising demand, improved regulatory frameworks, stronger institutions, and sustained political commitment as key drivers of the sector.

He invited private investors to collaborate with government through public-private partnerships and rent-to-own schemes to expand access to affordable housing. Mr. Adjei also highlighted the role of Ghanaians in the diaspora, noting that government continues to engage them as strategic partners in the country’s housing transformation agenda.

Concluding his remarks, the Minister expressed optimism that the Green City Housing Project marks the beginning of a new era for Ghana’s housing sector. “The lands of Dedesua will rise into thriving homes, vibrant communities, and expanded economic opportunities,” he said.

The ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, government officials, development partners, and representatives of the State Housing Company Limited.
