MTN Ghana has marked 30 years of operations in the country, with Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett highlighting the significant transformation of Ghana’s telecommunications industry since the early 1990s.

Speaking at the company’s 30th Anniversary Media Launch in Accra, Blewett described the milestone as significant for both MTN Ghana and the wider telecom sector. He congratulated the company’s board, management, staff, agents, partners, and customers for their role in driving the company’s growth over three decades.

“Ghana’s telecommunications industry has evolved dramatically since the early 1990s, when access to telephone services was extremely limited,” Blewett said.
“Today, the sector has grown into a modern, mobile driven and data-focused ecosystem serving millions of subscribers nationwide.”
He attributed the sector’s expansion to the combined efforts of mobile network operators, internet service providers, telecom infrastructure companies, and the broader network of businesses supporting the industry.

Blewett also acknowledged the role of regulatory bodies, including the National Communications Authority and the National Information Technology Agency, as well as successive governments, for creating policies that encouraged investment and digital expansion.
The CEO paid tribute to key policymakers who shaped the industry, singling out former Communications Minister and first Board Chairman of the NCA, John Dramani Mahama, for his contributions in the sector’s formative years.
Blewett noted that the growth of telecommunications in Ghana was built through the work of engineers, technical teams, sales personnel, and regulatory experts who expanded connectivity across the country.
Looking ahead, he pointed to Ghana’s recently launched National AI Strategy as a signal of the sector’s next phase, saying digital innovation and emerging technologies would define future growth.
The anniversary launch kicks off a series of activities planned by MTN Ghana to commemorate 30 years of operations, investment, and digital inclusion.
Since entering the Ghanaian market in 1994, MTN Ghana has grown to become the country’s largest mobile network operator and a major contributor to the digital economy.
