GFA Communications Director Urges Journalists to Fact-Check, Protect Black Stars Brand Through Credible Coverage

The Director of Communications of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has called on sports journalists to avoid misinformation and instead uphold professionalism that protects the image of the Black Stars.

Mr. Asante Twum made the remarks during a Media Coverage Strategies Program held at the American Corner in Kumasi, where he addressed journalists on ethical reporting and the role of the media in shaping the national team’s brand.

Emphasis on Accuracy and Accountability

He urged media practitioners to verify information and confirm with credible sources before publication. “Journalists should fast check their information, confirm their credible sources before they put it out there,” he said.

Mr. Asante Twum stressed that fairness, humanity, and accountability are core principles that build credibility. “Journalists should be fair, be human, be accountable, which leads to your credibility, and coverage that Ghana can be proud of,” he noted.

Protecting the National Team’s Image
The GFA Communications Director said the global football community’s respect for the Black Stars is tied to how the team is portrayed by local media.

“The world should respect the Black Stars, so they would respect how we cover them. We lift the team, the fans, and our world of profession,” he added.

He encouraged journalists to avoid sensationalism and misinformation that could damage the reputation of players and the national team, emphasizing that responsible coverage contributes to national pride and the growth of sports journalism in Ghana.

Call for Professional Standards
The Media Coverage Strategies Program brought together journalists and media stakeholders to discuss best practices in sports reporting, digital ethics, and the relationship between the media and football administrators.

Mr. Asante Twum’s address reinforced the GFA’s ongoing call for partnership with the media to promote accurate storytelling, protect the integrity of the game, and project Ghana football positively on the international stage.
