The National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association of Ghana has taken decisive action against illegal mining in the Ashanti Region, destroying over 120 pieces of mining equipment used by illegal miners to pollute major rivers.

The exercise, which supports the government’s ongoing anti-galamsey operations, has been ongoing for the past two weeks.

The taskforce began its operations in the Ahafo Ano South West District, where illegal mining had heavily polluted the Mankran and Offin Rivers.

The team then moved to Amadaa and Kotokuom in the Atwima Mponua District, targeting areas where illegal mining had caused significant environmental degradation.

During the raids, several miners fled their sites, abandoning excavators, chanfan platforms, engines, and other mining accessories, which were later destroyed by the team.

Speaking to journalists at a press conference in Kumasi, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, President of the National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association of Ghana, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to sustaining the operation to protect water bodies and farmlands.

He emphasized that the Association’s taskforce is complementing the government’s efforts to curb illegal mining nationwide.

Mr. Peprah also highlighted the importance of educating mining communities on the need to support the national fight against galamsey.

The Association plans to continue its outreach efforts, educating local populations on the dangers of illegal mining and the importance of adopting sustainable mining practices.

The National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association of Ghana has expressed its commitment to working closely with government agencies, including the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Minerals Commission, to ensure the success of the national campaign against galamsey.

The Association’s efforts are aimed at promoting responsible and sustainable small-scale mining practices, while protecting the environment and preserving Ghana’s natural resources for future generations.
