Tragic Loss at Islamic SHS: Samiru Abass’ Final Plea of Innocence Sparks Outcry Over Student Mental Health

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Samiru Abass, a 19-year-old final-year Business student and acting Boys’ Prefect at Islamic Senior High School (SHS) in Kumasi, took his own life on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, leaving behind a chilling message that has shaken the school community to its core.

Moments before jumping from the upper floor of a school block, Abass declared his innocence in a voice that echoed anguish and defiance: _“My accusers will face God’s judgment,”_ eyewitnesses recount.

The tragedy unfolded after Abass was accused of kissing and fondling a female student in a classroom, a claim brought forward by a teacher who seized his shirt as “evidence.”

The case swiftly landed before the school’s disciplinary committee. After a hearing, Abass was told to retrieve his shirt from the teacher a moment witnesses say pushed him to climb the building and leap to his death, dying instantly. His plea of innocence contrasts with earlier reports suggesting he’d been silently struggling with suicidal thoughts, raising urgent questions about how the situation was handled.

The school is now in mourning. Students and staff are grappling with shock, while many are demanding better counselling and psychological support. “This wasn’t just a tragedy it’s a wake-up call,” a student told Newsmen. Authorities, including the Ghana Education Service, have yet to comment officially as investigations continue.

Abass was buried the same day under Islamic tradition, with peers and teachers mourning a leader who seemed to carry an unbearable weight.

The incident has reignited debates on student mental health, with advocates urging schools to treat even casual hints of distress as emergencies. As grief lingers, the community whispers a plea: listen, before the silence becomes irreversible.
