Tricycle Riders In Ashanti Region Protest Government’s Restrictions, Citing Broken Promises and Harassment

The Ashanti Region Tricycle Riders Association, popularly known as Pragia, took to the streets of Kumasi today to protest against the government’s restrictions on their operations. The protesters, led by Association Chairman Seidu Mubarak, expressed frustration and disappointment over the alleged humiliation and intimidation they have faced, particularly in the Central Business District of Kumasi, specifically Adum.

According to Mubarak, the Pragia riders have been barred from operating in the area since the previous government, despite promises made by the current administration during its campaign to lift the restrictions if elected. “The humiliation and intimidation are too much,” Mubarak stated. “We are being harassed unnecessarily by the Kumasi Metropolitan City guards and the Ghana police.”

Mubarak emphasized that the protest was a call for their rights to be respected and a demand for their share of freedom and the national cake. “Hitting on the streets of the regional capital Kumasi is a sign of demanding our own share of freedom and of the national cake,” he said.

The Pragia Riders Association is urging President of Ghana to intervene and address their concerns as a matter of urgency. They have petitioned the Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Richard Boadi, and the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Frank Amoakohene, seeking support for their cause.

The petition was received by Regional Coordinating Director Michael Owusu Amankwah on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Minister Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene. Mr. Amankwah stated that the Regional Minister is currently out of office but assured the protesters that the Regional Security Council will convened a meeting to address the concerns raised in the petition.

The protest highlights the ongoing struggle between the government and Pragia riders, who demand greater freedom to operate and contribute to the country’s economy. The riders are seeking a resolution to their plestation and a chance to participate in the country’s development.

The Pragia Riders Association’s protest serves as a reminder of the need for dialogue and collaboration between the government and stakeholders to address the concerns of all parties involved. As Ghana strives to develop its economy and improve the lives of its citizens, the government must balance its regulatory responsibilities with the needs and aspirations of its people.

The Association has given the Authorities two weeks Ultimatum to address their concern and they’ll bounce back to the Central Business District if nothing is being done on their concern raised.

The situation remains tense as the Pragia riders await a response from the authorities. The outcome of the Regional Security Council’s meeting is being closely watched, and it remains to be seen how the government will address the concerns of the Pragia Riders Association.
