MTN Ghana has kicked off its 2025 nationwide road safety training program, with drivers and staff in the Northern Business District being the first to benefit from the initiative. The training, which took place at the MTN office in Nhyiaeso, Kumasi, marks a significant shift in the company’s approach to road safety, as it partners with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to deliver the program.

The program aims to equip MTN drivers and staff with practical road safety skills and strengthen compliance with national road traffic regulations. Given MTN’s position as Ghana’s largest telecommunications provider with a vast fleet and staff base, the training is expected to heighten safe driving behavior among MTN drivers across the country.

Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director for Education, Research and Training at MTTD, led the facilitation and emphasized the importance of proactive measures to protect road users. He expressed concern over the rising incidence of preventable road crashes in Ghana, citing statistics that show 11,000 road crashes, resulting in over 2,400 deaths and 12,000 injuries, were recorded between January and October 2025 alone.
“This partnership with MTN Ghana is timely. Building the capacity of their drivers and staff is essential so that when they are on the road, they will be seen to be safer in the way they handle vehicles,” he stated.
MTN Ghana conducts the capacity-building program twice annually to enhance the driving skills and safety awareness of its staff drivers. The training focuses on defensive driving techniques, hazard recognition and risk assessment, safe driving under varying conditions, vehicle inspection and maintenance, and compliance with Ghana’s traffic regulations.

MTN has maintained a strong reputation for its safety programs, with MTN drivers previously winning corporate road safety awards in Ghana. The company’s road safety policy mandates strict adherence to Ghana’s road traffic laws, with disciplinary action applicable for any breach.

The training is part of MTN’s commitment to ensuring the protection of its employees, passengers, and all road users. By collaborating with certified training partners such as the MTTD, MTN continues to implement best practices in corporate driver training, helping reduce accidents and promoting a culture of safety on Ghana’s roads.
