President Mahama will meet with Otumfuo over the Bawku issue.

In an effort to bring about lasting peace in Bawku, which is in the Upper East Region, President John Dramani Mahama will meet with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, this weekend.

As part of a peace-building mission, President Mahama visited Bawku and Nalerigu on Tuesday, January 14, in an attempt to put a stop to the region’s ongoing conflict. During their meeting, he told the Mamprugu Kingdom’s ruler, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, about the government’s commitment to peace.

“As we strive for a peaceful resolution, I came to ask him and his people to exercise patience and restraint,” President Mahama said.

He also had a conversation with former President Nana Akufo-Addo, who had initiated mediation efforts during his tenure.

According to Mahama, the Bawku issue can only be resolved with the expertise of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the late Yagbonwura, who were instrumental in ending the Dagbon war.

President Mahama said he will be going to the Asantehene on January 19 to talk about the situation and find ways to continue mediation.

“I will give Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II an update on any developments following my meeting with Otumfuo,” he continued.

Even though the Bawku issue hasn’t been resolved for decades, President Mahama is dedicated to collaborating with traditional leaders to bring about lasting peace.
