Otumfuo Destools Paramount Chief Of Kenyase No. 2 Over Breach Of Asante Custom

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled the Paramount Chief of Kenyase No. 2, Nana Kwabena Nsia Ababio, for what he described as persistent violations of Asante customs and traditions.

The decision was taken on Monday, July 27, 2026, during a sitting of the Asanteman Traditional Council at the Manhyia Palace.

Delivering the ruling, Otumfuo cited a series of “untraditional conduct” by Nana Nsia Ababio, including the unauthorized creation of new stools within the traditional area.

“I warned you several times. Now look at the outcome. You created Hyiawohene in your area. What right do you have to do that? You were a courtier at Hyiawohemaa’s house, so how can you create that position? Through your service, Kenyase No. 2 was created, and you were made the chief. The land you occupy belongs to Kenyasehene,” the Asantehene stated.

Following the pronouncement, the ceremonial footwear of the destooled chief was removed in accordance with custom. Designated persons were also instructed to perform the required ram slaughter to formally seal the destoolment.

In the same ruling, Otumfuo destooled nearly all of the Paramount Chief’s kingmakers who were found to have violated their oath of office.

However, the Kontihene was spared. The destooled Akyeame and other linguists within the traditional council were reinstated with immediate effect.

“There is no other kingmaker in the town now. You [remaining kingmakers] will help the queen to steer the affairs of the area,” the Council was directed.

Background To The Case

The matter came before the Asanteman Traditional Council after Nana Kwabena Nsia Ababio wrote to the Registrar of the Council announcing the destoolment of the Queen of Kenyase No. 2, Nana Akua Tikwamaa, for alleged gross insubordination.

In a 10-point petition, the Paramount Chief accused the Queen of:
– Indiscriminate sale of lands
– Unauthorized issuance of letters on traditional council letterhead
– Destoolment of the Nsafoahene and Adontenghene
– Resale of land already sold
– Unauthorized appointment of sub-queens
– Disregard for traditional duties
– Disrespect toward paramount chiefs and kingmakers
– Deployment of land guards

Responding to the charges, Nana Akua Tikwamaa dismissed all allegations against her.

She denied selling lands independently, explaining that a parcel she sold was done at the instance of the chief.

She further accused the Atipimhene, Akwamuhene, Apesimakohene, the wife of the Paramount Chief, and the Council’s Town Planning Officer of forging documents and engaging in indiscriminate land sales.

On the alleged destoolment of the Adontenghene and Nsafoahene, she said: “The two are still at post and frequent the Palace always. How is that possible if I indeed destooled them?”
She also denied the use of land guards.

Nana Akua further accused the Paramount Chief of breaching Asante tradition in the creation of stools, citing Akyempimhene, Hyiawuhene, Sumankwaahene, Anantahene, and Atipimhene.
She alleged that he had allotted stools to his sons and sisters in contravention of custom, and that his spouse had assumed the role of queen, dictating to the Council and making key decisions.

With the destoolment, the Asanteman Traditional Council has tasked the Queen, with support from the remaining kingmakers and reinstated linguists, to oversee the administration of Kenyase No. 2 until new arrangements are made in line with Asante custom.
