According to Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul, the government should not be held responsible for any security lapses that had place before the 2024 general elections.
He emphasized that accountability lies with the National Elections Security Task Force, led by Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and tasked with ensuring security throughout the election process.
In response to the Minority’s worries regarding the deaths of two persons during the polls, Mr. Nitiwul told Parliament on Monday, December 16, that any questions regarding election-related security matters should be directed to the Task Force.
“The National Elections Security Task Force, headed by the Inspector General of Police, was in charge of security on election day and after.”
Therefore, if the Speaker or the House decides they want to call election security to come and brief this House, they cannot be ministers or government appointees, as they have no role in this process.
The fact that the Executive was not in control of security was actually a good thing. Because you cannot be a judge of your own court, things have always been that way. It’s incorrect.
Because of this, the IGP and his crew are the only people you can call.
