The Ashanti regional minister-designate has outlined a strategy to use agriculture to empower youth.

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister designate, has detailed his strategy for empowering the region’s young through agricultural development. During his screening process, Dr. Amoakohene highlighted the region’s immense agricultural potential, with distinct areas specializing in different commodities.

According to Dr. Amoakohene, Offinso North is known for its tomatoes and cashews, whilst mining areas concentrate on cocoa production and horticulture.

To capitalize on this potential, a cashew board under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture is being formed.

This campaign intends to make cashew cultivation a profitable endeavour, encouraging young people to consider farming as a viable career option.

However, obstacles exist, particularly in terms of land ownership and financing. Rural MMDAs have land but no capital, whereas urban MMDAs have both.

To remedy this, MMDAs might use their power under Section 119 of the Local Government Act to buy land and develop partnerships, giving youth access to arable land for farming.

The region has enormous agricultural potential, including large-scale maize and rice agriculture, as well as vegetable production.

The Atwima Mponua District, for example, has about 423 hectares of citrus and 269 hectares of oil palm plantations, which provide raw materials for processing. By capitalizing on these prospects and tackling existing difficulties, the Ashanti Region may realize its agricultural potential, provide job opportunities for youngsters, and help local families.

Dr. Amoakohene’s initiative aims to empower young people, boost economic growth, and increase food security in the region.
