Tension gripped parts of the Atwima Nwabiagya North District in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, after residents took matters into their own hands and set ablaze a vehicle used by suspected livestock thieves at Maabang.

The incident occurred when the suspects, travelling in a Pregio commercial bus, allegedly stole six goats and six sheep from the Esaso community.

According to reports, the residents, alerted by the Assembly Member for Maabang Electoral Area, Hon. Atta Akwasi, mounted a coordinated chase and ambush along the suspects’ route. When the suspects reached Maabang and realised residents were waiting, they abandoned their vehicle and fled into the bush. The residents gave them a hot chase and managed to arrest two of the suspects.
The angry residents, frustrated by the frequent theft of their livestock, set the vehicle ablaze before police from Adankwame arrived to prevent the suspects from being lynched. Hon. Akwasi said the community had been plagued by livestock theft, and the residents were determined to take action.

The police later managed to arrest another suspect who escaped during the confrontation. The authorities are now working to bring the perpetrators to justice and recover the stolen livestock.

The incident highlights the need for increased security measures to protect livestock and prevent theft in the area. The residents’ actions demonstrate their frustration and determination to take matters into their own hands if the authorities fail to address the issue.
