The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana have embarked on a nationwide initiative to boost pension literacy and trust among workers, starting with a regional forum in Kumasi.
The move aims to educate workers on pension benefits and increase transparency within the scheme, providing thousands of workers with a clearer understanding of their retirement plans.

The engagement addressed workers’ concerns about retirement security, attendance to retirement security, and highlighted the scheme’s defined benefit model.

SSNIT’s Deputy Director-General, Mr. Adam Sulley, described the Trust as a ‘sure banker’, urging employees to join and benefit from the scheme. This assurance is likely to boost confidence among workers.

SSNIT’s assets have grown from GHC 20 billion in 2024 to GHC 25 billion in 2025, with significant investments underway. The Trust is expecting to pay out GHc 8.21 billion in pensions by the close of 2026, up from GHc 6.77 billion in 2025. These figures demonstrate SSNIT’s commitment to securing workers’ futures.

The Trust is targeting 2.4 million active contributors by the end of 2026 and 2.8 million by 2027. This ambitious goal requires collaboration with stakeholders, including TUC Ghana.

Mr. Joshua Ansah, TUC Ghana’s Secretary General, commended SSNIT for the nationwide engagement, saying it’s deepening transparency and accountability.
The initiative is timely, given the economic challenges many Ghanaians face. With many workers not contributing to formal pension schemes, SSNIT and TUC Ghana’s collaboration is a welcome move.
The pension literacy drive is expected to empower workers to take control of their retirement planning.
The theme, “Empowering Unions, Secure Futures: Deepening Pension Literacy across Ghana”, highlights the importance of this initiative. By educating workers on pension benefits, SSNIT and TUC Ghana are contributing to the nation’s development.
Overall, SSNIT and TUC Ghana’s pension literacy drive is a positive step towards securing workers’ futures. The success of this initiative will depend on the level of engagement and participation from workers and stakeholders.
