Some Nigerian inmates prefer to be jailed because of free meals – Lawyer laments

Chisom Agbafor, a corporate lawyer from Nigeria, described a pitiful interaction she had with several prisoners.

According to lawyer Chisom Agbafor, attempts have been made to secure bail for certain prisoners in Nigeria, but they are refusing to leave the jail due to the provision of free food and room and board.

Because of the nation’s economic crisis, some prisoners who did not commit crimes would rather stay behind bars, Chisom said, calling it one of the hardest pills she has ever taken as a lawyer.

Some of the prisoners in Nigerian jails didn’t even commit the crime, which is one of the hardest things I’ve had to accept as a lawyer. They reject your attempts to fight for their release, nevertheless. since they can only find calm, free food, and free rent in that prison cell. On X, she shared.

“They are not visible outside. They exist, at least, inside. This is how dysfunctional this nation is. “Oh,” she moaned. One X user responded by saying that reading the story is painful.

The reading of this hurts. choosing slavery over freedom due to the current situation in the nation. May the facts of our present day not imprison our thoughts. Have faith that there is always a better life ahead!
