In 62 public and private tertiary schools around Ghana, 9,433 students have received loans that have been approved by the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF).
One of the first significant actions Dr. Saajida Shiraz has done since taking over as the SLTF’s acting CEO is this one. Concerned about the delays in payment, Dr. Shiraz apologized to the impacted students and promised to make sure they received their money on time.
In order to avoid further setbacks, she underlined that the SLTF will put efficiency first under her direction.
She also reiterated her commitment to President John Dramani Mahama’s plan to improve financing for tertiary education, pointing out that she has taken action to ensure the seamless implementation of the SLTF Plus policy, which aims to increase funding and boost the fund’s overall effectiveness.
Dr. Shiraz reflected on her first few days in office and said they were fruitful, full of strategic conversations and interactions. She engaged with SLTF personnel, actively participated in the National Education Forum on education finance, and looked for methods to improve the fund’s operations.
She also visited two zonal offices, evaluated the SLTF regional headquarters in Accra, and spoke with recently hired Deputy CEO Kojo Danquah. She pointed out that significant steps have already been taken to guarantee the fund better supports students.
Dr. Shiraz has established a proactive tone for her term with these early steps, promising students that the SLTF would be providing better service and accessibility in the months to come.
