Rural Banking Week Launch Highlights Importance of ESG Principles in Financial Inclusion

The Ashanti Chapter of the Association of Rural Banks (ARB) has launched its 10th Rural Banking Week Celebration, emphasizing the theme “Driving Sustainable Financial Inclusion and Good Governance in Rural and Community Banks Based on ESG Principles”.

Speaking at the press launch, Lawyer Ben Kwakye-Adeefe, President of the Ashanti Chapter of ARB, highlighted the crucial role of Rural and Community Banks (RCBs) in promoting economic development and reducing poverty in rural areas. He noted that RCBs have been instrumental in providing financial services to underserved communities, with over 6.5 million active customers and more than 20,000 people employed across Ghana.

Adding that, Rural banking in Ghana began in 1976 with the establishment of the first rural bank in Agona Nyakrom, a farming community in the Central Region. Since then, the sector has grown to 147 licensed RCBs with over 850 branches across all 16 regions of Ghana.

Lawyer Kwakye-Adeefe emphasized the importance of integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into RCBs’ operations. ESG principles provide a framework for RCBs to manage their impact on the environment, promote social development, and ensure effective governance.

The benefits of ESG-driven RCBs include:

-Increased Financial Inclusion: RCBs can expand financial services to underserved communities, promoting economic growth and reducing poverty.
– *Improved Governance*: ESG principles can enhance transparency, accountability, and risk management, ensuring the stability of RCBs.
– *Sustainable Development*: RCBs can contribute to sustainable development, supporting local economies and promoting environmental sustainability.

Lawyer Kwakye-Adeefe called on RCBs, regulators, and stakeholders to work together to drive sustainable financial inclusion and good governance in RCBs. He emphasized the need for RCBs to adopt ESG principles to promote sustainable development, financial inclusion, and good governance in rural areas.

The 10th Rural Banking Week Celebration will include the 2nd ARB Women’s Conference, scheduled to take place from November 20-23, 2025, at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho, Volta Region.
