Policewoman Charged with Murder of Taxi Driver in Accra

A policewoman, Gifty Oppong, has appeared before the Adabraka District Court charged with murder after allegedly shooting and killing a taxi driver, Edward Awuku Owusu, also known as Papa Kwesi, at Tetegu near Weija on January 19, 2026. The court did not take her plea and remanded her into lawful custody, with a next appearance scheduled for February 25, 2026.

Oppong’s lawyer, Mr. Raymond Felli, applied for bail, but the court denied the request. The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Josephine Asondek, is working with the Ghana Police Service to investigate the incident.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Owusu was shot during a confrontation with Oppong and was rushed to the Police Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Oppong, who sustained head and leg injuries after being hit by a vehicle while attempting to flee, is receiving medical attention.

Exhibits collected from the scene include a live 9mm round, a magazine, and an empty 9mm cartridge, which are being used as evidence in the ongoing investigation.
