The government is being urged by the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana ( MOWAG ) to immediately pay the 50% allowance on the base wage of all frontline healthcare workers, which has been behind on payments for the last nine months.
During a private discussion with Dr. Smith Graham, the CEO of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission ( FWSC ), the Association emphasized the urgency of taking immediate steps to reduce the rising hostilities among mortuary employees nationwide.
“We are urging the government to act right now through the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.
MOWAG General Secretary Richard Kofi Jordan stated, “Our members are losing patience and morale is low.”
“We are unable to serve in such circumstances.” Throughout the meeting, MOWAG also reminded the government of its pledge to provide funding for the hiring of 500 additional mortuary staff in order to alleviate the existing labour shortage.
The Association also requested that there be sufficient Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), a one-time yearly payment of GH₵1,000 per employee, and allowances for uniform washing and cleaning.
In addition, they reaffirmed their demand for the COVID-19 risk allowance, which former President Nana Akufo-Addo promised but has yet to be paid.
Dr. Smith Graham promised to resolve the issues and acknowledged the concerns expressed by the Association.
“These complaints are taken seriously,” Dr. Graham said. “We will communicate with the appropriate ministries to guarantee that these issues are settled as soon as possible.”
