The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has asked the John Dramani Mahama administration to reintroduce the bill on Human Sexual Rights and Family Values as soon as possible in order to ensure that the anti-LGBT bill is voted into law on time.
On Tuesday, January 14, President Mahama met with the Bishops and proposed that a government-sponsored measure would be more successful than the current Private Member’s bill since it would allow for greater national consensus and broader participation.
The President also underlined how important it is to update school curricula to include moral and cultural training in order to improve children’s African and Ghanaian values.
Most Reverend Matthew Gyamfi, president of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, said the government ought to act swiftly to approve the measure.
Our desire is for it to become a law. If it is enacted into law, that does not exclude its teaching in schools.
Among other things, civic education in schools teaches many of our laws.
Therefore, the necessity of teaching it does not exclude its inclusion in legislation.
We don’t want any technical terms used to disparage what Ghanaians desire because they are massively in favour of it,” Rev. Gyamfi continued.
