Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Ghana’s Eighth Parliament, has pledged to give his all if elected Speaker of the Ninth Parliament.
In response to President-elect John Dramani Mahama’s directive that Bagbin be nominated by the parliamentary leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he made this pledge.
The president-elect highlighted Bagbin’s extensive parliamentary experience and leadership skills, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the legislature.
Bagbin thanked the NDC leadership, the party’s legislative executives, and the president-elect for entrusting him with this crucial role in his nomination.
“I am deeply humbled by His Excellency’s confidence in my ability to lead the august House as we begin a new chapter in our nation’s democratic journey,” he stated.
“Throughout my years of service to Parliament and the people of Ghana, I have always remained loyal to Ghana and committed to the principles of justice, fairness, and respect for the rule of law,” he continued, reflecting on his longstanding dedication to government.
Bagbin promised Ghanaians that in his role as Speaker, he would follow these values and work to create a Parliament that is open, inclusive, and honest.
He pledged, “I will more than ever recommit myself to the task at hand, striving to fortify our democratic institutions and guarantee that Parliament continues to be an efficient and responsive institution to the needs and aspirations of the people.”
Bagbin also expressed gratitude to the NDC’s National Executives and Parliamentary Leadership for enabling him to seek a second term.
He pledged to uphold the trust that had been placed in him and dedicated himself to working diligently to improve Ghana’s democracy and legislative progress.
