Kumasi MPs Bloc visit victims of the Suame Magazine fire.

The Kumasi MPs bloc visited Suame Magazine to learn more about the effects of the fire outbreak that happened two weeks ago.

Members of Parliament from the Bantama, Tafo Pankrono, Suame, Oforikrom, and Manhyia South constituencies, respectively, Francis Asenso Boakye, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, John Darko, Michael Akwasi Aidoo, and Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah constituencies were in the entourage.

Millions of Ghanaian cedis worth of properties, including automobiles, spare parts, and oil marketing stores, were severely damaged in the horrific fire.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) conducted an investigation and found that the fire was caused by a power outage that affected shops that specialized in welding, painting, lubrication, battery maintenance, lathe machine operations, and many other areas.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Francis Asenso Boakye, the chairman of the Kumasi bloc of MPs, reaffirmed their dedication to the welfare of the constituents and pledged to work with authorities to develop long-term solutions to stop future fire tragedies in the area.

The MP for Bantama expressed worries about the possible causes of the fire, including unauthorized electrical connections, the use of temporary building materials, and unplanned settlements.

He urged the appropriate authorities to immediately implement stronger market safety rules and enhance urban planning.

The main reason for this is that a lot of these unofficial commercial settlements and places for these mechanics are poorly organized; therefore, anyone would easily erect a structure and construct stuff on it. Second, the materials they (settlers) employ to construct these structures are mostly temporary materials, like wood, plastic, etc., and the spread becomes even more destructive when these catch fire,” he said.

According to Hon. Asenso Boakye, there are plans to involve the government, traditional rulers, garage associations, and market queens, among other stakeholders, in order to find a solution to the recurring fire outbreaks that are harming businesses in Kumasi.

The settlement’s unlawful electrical hookups and inadequate design were among his grievances.

The Ghana Fire Service was urged by the former minister of roads and highways under the Akufo-Addo administration to implement stringent safety protocols in this informal community and other locations in order to prevent future fire outbreaks.

The Tafo Pankrono constituency’s member of parliament, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, cautioned both public and private organisations to give insurance programs and interventions top priority in order to protect those affected by the recurring fires.

The Ghana National Association of Garages’ Ashanti Regional Chairman, Alhaji Lukeman Mohammed Nuhu Appiadu, urged the Suame Magazine to undergo a technical makeover in order to improve safety and inventiveness.

The Kumasi bloc of MPs is made up of members of parliament from the 10 constituencies listed below.

The constituencies of Manhyia North, Manhyia South, Bantama, Suame, Kwadaso, Nhyiaeso, Subin, Oforikrom, and Asokwa are among them. Promoting Kumasi’s growth is one of the main responsibilities of the Kumasi bloc of MPs.
