Independence Square is packed with thousands of people for Mahama’s swearing-in ceremony.

The swearing-in event for President-elect John Dramani Mahama has drawn thousands of Ghanaians, primarily members and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to Accra’s Independence Square.

In order to guarantee seats at their desired locations, some people spent the night at the arena, while others arrived early on Tuesday morning, as Kumasipioneer.com is aware.

Mr. Mahama secured the chance to retake the presidency by winning the general election in December of 2024.

He had previously been Vice President under the late John Evans Atta Mills, and he took over as President for the rest of that term after his boss passed away.

He ran for and won the presidency in 2012, and he held the office until 2016, when Nana Akufo-Addo defeated him in his attempt to be re-elected.

In the 2020 election, Mr. Mahama attempted to run again but was defeated by Nana Akufo-Addo.

But in the 2024 election, Mr. Mahama defeated his nearest opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), by a margin of more than 1.6 million votes.

On Tuesday, January 7, Mr. Mahama and his running mate, Professor Jane Nana Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana’s first female vice president since the country’s independence in 1957, will take the oath of office at Independence Square in Accra.
