The rising cost of living and disdain for the law in Ghana, according to John Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have encouraged Ghanaians to vote for the NDC in this year’s election.
The former president stated during the “Worship with the Clergy” event in Kumasi that the NPP government’s inadequate economic management was to blame for the depreciation of the cedi, the return of dumsor due to energy sector debt, the increase in food prices, and debt restructuring.
“For some time now, there have been rampant power outages resulting from accumulated debt by this current government. There is dumsor, but they don’t want to issue a timetable. Apart from the energy sector, food is expensive, and it is one of the highest in Africa according to the World Bank.
Many Ghanaians are tired of the hardship and are calling for the return of the NDC, which has a good track record,” he said.
Mr. Mahama waved into the conflict between Parliament and the Supreme Court, reiterating the need for the President to show leadership by mobiliszing the clergy to convince two sides to address any difficulties.
He called for a reform of Ghana’s constitution to prevent the need for repeated trips to the Supreme Court for interpretation.
“What is happening in parliament is something that can easily be solved by leadership. If the president would call both parties, I mean parliament and the Supreme Court and involve the clergy, this issue would be solved easily.
I have always stated that all controversies in our constitution should be looked at and necessary reviews made to prevent frequent visits to the Supreme Court for interpretation. If we do that, our democracy will be strengthened,” Mahama suggested.
According to John Mahama, his government’s second coming will forbid mining in waterways and forest reserves and promote ethical mining practices.
Galamsey is one of the main issues this nation is dealing with. This illicit mining is destroying our forests, lands, and waterways. In order to protect the integrity of our ecosystem, NDC would outlaw mining in forests and river bodies and promote ethical mining practices, Mr. Mahama stated.
John Mahama called on the church and Ghanaians to strive for a peaceful election. He believes that nothing can replace the democracy and peace that our country has.
Although he is unhappy with the decline of Ghanaian democracy, he believes that a united effort by the church and Ghanaians in general would restore faith in our system.
Ghana’s democracy received a dismal rating, and the country’s youth now reject democracy and prefer a military regime. We shouldn’t return to the military past, when guns were used to rule. At all costs, we have to defend our democracy,” he said.
