Ghana Government Boosts Public Transport with 500 New Buses for Metro Mass Transit

The government of Ghana has unveiled plans to significantly boost public transportation nationwide with the proposed acquisition of 500 additional buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL). This move aims to enhance the operations of MMTL, improve public transportation services, and support the country’s economic reform goals.

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe made the announcement in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025. According to Minister Nikpe, the first phase of the rollout is expected to commence early next year, with approximately 150 buses arriving in the country. This phased deployment will enable MMTL to expand its route network, increase its operational capacity, and provide more reliable and affordable public transportation services to Ghanaians.

The Minister highlighted that MMTL’s current fleet of 134 buses is inadequate to meet the growing demand for public transportation, which has limited the company’s ability to maintain operations and expand its services. The new buses will be deployed across the country to optimize existing routes and establish new ones in underserved areas.

In response to parliamentary queries, Minister Nikpe emphasized that the bus acquisition is part of a broader strategy to modernize terminal infrastructure, enhance service standards, and create job opportunities in the transportation sector. “These buses will be deployed within the country to optimize existing routes and establish new ones in underserved areas,” he added.

To ensure seamless operations, Minister Nikpe disclosed that Metro Mass Transit is working to operationalize elements of a 24-hour economy. This includes the traffic unit and vehicle maintenance department, which will guarantee that buses are always available and in good working condition.

The government’s initiative aims to address the transportation needs of Ghanaians while promoting economic growth and development. By expanding and improving public transportation services, the government hopes to enhance the quality of life for citizens, increase economic opportunities, and support the country’s long-term development goals.

With this ambitious plan, Ghana is set to witness a significant transformation in its public transportation sector, providing citizens with more reliable, efficient, and affordable transportation options
