Ghana AIDS Commission: Kumasi Accounts for 45% of Ashanti Region’s Estimated 63,000 HIV Cases

An estimated 63,000 people are living with HIV in the Ashanti Region, according to the latest district-level data released by the Ghana AIDS Commission.

The infographic highlights significant variations in HIV burden across the region’s metropolitan and municipal districts, with Kumasi Metropolitan bearing the largest share of cases.

Kumasi Metropolitan alone accounts for an estimated 28,000 people living with HIV (PLHIV), representing nearly 45% of the regional total.

Health officials attribute the high figure to the district’s large population and urban concentration, which often correlate with increased transmission risk and testing activity.

Obuasi Municipal follows with an estimated 9,000 cases, while Ejisu Municipal records about 6,000. Together, the three districts make up more than 68% of all estimated HIV cases in the region.

At the other end of the scale, Asante Akim Central reports the lowest estimated burden with 200 cases, followed by Asante Akim Central Municipal with 300 and Afigya Kwabre North with 400.

Most other districts fall within the 500 to 3,200 range, with a marked drop-off below 1,000 cases. The disparity reflects differences in population size as well as the administrative grouping of metropolitan versus municipal areas.

The Ghana AIDS Commission emphasized that the figures are estimates and should be treated as approximations rather than exact counts of diagnosed cases. Actual numbers may differ depending on testing rates, reporting systems, and access to healthcare services across districts.

The infographic concludes with a public health message urging residents to know their HIV status and seek regular testing.

“KNOW YOUR STATUS. GET TESTED. STAY SAFE. LIVE HEALTHY.”_ is the message highlighted to encourage early detection, treatment, and efforts to reduce stigma around HIV in the region.

Health advocates say the data underscores the need for targeted interventions in high-burden areas while maintaining awareness and prevention efforts in lower-burden districts.
