FDA Sounds Alarm on Counterfeit HIV Test Kits in Ghana

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a urgent public health alert warning Ganaiss about the presence of falsified HIV diagnostic kits circulating in the market.

The counterfeit kits, identified as VISITECT CD4 Advanced Disease test kits with lot number 0001586, pose a significant risk to public health due to their potential to produce inaccurate test results, leading to delayed treatment or unnecessary anxiety for those affected.

According to the FDA, the fake kits are easily distinguishable from the authentic ones, which are manufactured by AccuBio Limited and carry a different lot number, 0002172.

The counterfeit kits wrongly list Omega Diagnostics Limited as the manufacturer and display incorrect manufacturing and expiry dates.

FDA has directed all healthcare facilities, laboratories, and testing centers to immediately inspect their stock of VISITECT CD4 test kits and remove any kits with the suspicious lot number from circulation.

The presence of these falsified HIV test kits is particularly concerning, as accurate testing is crucial for effective HIV care.

The FDA emphasized that any error in test results can have severe consequences, including delayed treatment for individuals living with HIV or unnecessary fear for those who receive false-positive outcomes.

The Authority has initiated investigations to trace the source of the counterfeit kits and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

The FDA is urging healthcare professionals and the public to report any suspected fake medical products through its official channels and to verify medical products before use to avoid potential harm.

In light of this development, the FDA is calling for increased vigilance across the health sector to protect the public from the risks associated with counterfeit medical products.

The public is advised to be cautious when acquiring medical products and to report any suspicious items to the FDA.
