As couples celebrated Valentine’s Day on February 14, some pharmacies in Accra reported a notable decline in condom sales, a sharp contrast to trends observed in previous years.
This development reflects a recent report by the Ghana AIDS Commission, which highlights a worrying drop in condom use, particularly among young people.

Valentine’s Day, a global celebration of love and affection, is often a time for intimacy and renewed discussions on sexual health and protection in Ghana. However, the decline in condom sales suggests that many individuals may be prioritizing romance over responsible sex practices.

Leticia Arhin, Manager of Success Pharmacy at Abeka Lapaz, noted that she has not recorded a single condom sale this Valentine’s Day. “The sales for condoms are very low today. We opened at 6 a.m., and not a single customer has walked in for a condom. Most customers are coming for aphrodisiacs to boost energy levels instead,” she explained.
The Ghana AIDS Commission report indicates that condom use is declining, raising concerns about a potential rise in sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. The report also notes that some men avoid using condoms because the available sizes do not fit properly, further limiting protection.
The Head of Prevention at the National AIDS Control Programme expressed concern over the trend, warning that declining condom use, coupled with low HIV testing rates, could contribute to a rise in infections. “Be responsible and use condoms. If you do not know your HIV status, please get tested. Together, we can help prevent the spread of HIV in the country,” the official urged.
Health experts are calling on the Ghana AIDS Commission to intensify public education campaigns and expand access to protective measures to address the ongoing decline in condom use.
“We need to take a proactive approach to address this issue and ensure that individuals have access to the resources they need to protect themselves,” said a health expert.
The decline in condom sales and use is a concerning trend that requires immediate attention. As the nation celebrates love and intimacy, it is essential to prioritize responsible sex practices and ensure that individuals have access to the resources they need to protect themselves.
