Bridging the Digital Divide: MoCD Launches Girls-In-ICT Training in Upper West

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has launched the Girls-In-ICT Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop in the Upper West Region, specifically in Wa.

The program aims to equip 100 teachers with ICT skills, who will then train 1,000 selected girls from Primary Four to Junior High School across the region.

The initiative seeks to bridge the digital gender divide and inspire the next generation of female innovators.

By providing teachers with intensive training in digital skills and computer literacy, the program aims to create a ripple effect, empowering young girls with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the digital age.

The training, which runs from September 18th to 22nd, 2025, is being held at the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies in Wa.

The selected teachers, drawn from all 11 districts of the Upper West Region, will undergo a one-week program designed to enhance their ICT skills.

The Girls-In-ICT initiative has already made a significant impact nationwide, with over 15,981 girls and 1,292 teachers trained in ICT, coding, machine learning, and other digital skills since its inception. The program provides a unique opportunity to close the participation gap in digital technology, especially among young girls.

The Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq., commended the Ministry for selecting the region as a focal point for the training. He urged teachers to approach the exercise with commitment, noting that their role as mentors and role models is crucial in shaping the digital future of Ghana.

The program will culminate in a competition, mentorship sessions, and an awards ceremony, where the best-performing 100 girls will receive laptops, and additional prizes will be awarded to the top three achievers.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote digital literacy and innovation among young girls in Ghana.

The Training of Trainers in the Upper West Region is a significant step towards bridging the digital gender divide and empowering young girls with ICT skills.

With similar programs already conducted in the Volta Region and the Savannah Region scheduled next, the initiative is poised to make a lasting impact on the digital landscape of Ghana.
