In preparation for the election next week, the different presidential contenders and the political parties running for office this year have convened in Accra to sign a peace agreement.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), which is in charge of organizing the polls, promised to run the process democratically.
On behalf of the Commission, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa promised to maintain peace during the election.
“My team and I will continue to conduct our activities in a manner that will ensure peace before, during, and long after the 2024 elections,” she stated during the occasion on behalf of the Ghanaian Electoral Commission.
She added, “The processes we will employ on election day and in the days that follow are robust, transparent, and inclusive.”
She also urged the various candidates to accept the results that the Commission will announce after the polls in good faith.
The peace pact is intended to bind leaders of the various political parties in the race to act in ways that will promote peace in the country and also to accept the election results without resorting to actions that could jeopardize the country’s democracy.
