Even though Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has not yet formally announced the results of the December 7 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has conceded defeat to John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
At a press conference on Sunday, December 8, 2024, Dr. Bawumia congratulated Mr. Mahama on his resounding victory in the polls. Dr. Bawumia revealed, “I just called His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to send him my congratulations as the president-elect of the Republic of Ghana.”
“The Ghanaian people have spoken; they have voted for change at this time, and we respectfully accept that decision,” Bawumia said.
Dr. Bawumia continued by saying that he made the compromise in order to maintain national harmony and avoid further hostilities.
“My concession speech before the EC’s official announcement is intended to prevent further tension and preserve the peace in our country,” he explained.
He noted that the NDC had won the majority in Parliament as well as the presidential election, even though final collation was still ongoing.
“The NDC has won the parliamentary election and the presidential election decisively, but they are still awaiting the final collation,” said former President Mahama.
“Those findings, in my opinion, won’t alter the final result,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
