In Ashanti Region’s Atwima Kwanwoma District, history was made when Assembly Members unanimously approved Grace Asamoah Agyemang as the next District Chief Executive (DCE), becoming the first woman to hold the role.
Ms. Agyemang received 47 “YES” votes out of 47 ballots cast during a confirmation ceremony on Friday, May 16 in the Assembly’s conference hall in Twedie, the district capital. At the local and regional levels, Electoral Commission representatives oversaw the procedure. Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and Ghana Immigration Service ensured safety and order throughout the event, which was conducted under strict security.
Following the announcement, there was a flurry of celebration, with members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) joining dignitaries and stakeholders in cheering the result.
In her acceptance address, the DCE-elect thanked President John Dramani Mahama for putting her forward and the Assembly members and government appointees for their tremendous support.
“I am truly honored to serve the people of Atwima Kwanwoma. I accept this responsibility with a clear conscience and open heart, bearing no grudges. I promise an inclusive administration that welcomes constructive input from all,” she stated.
The Ghana Education Service’s (GES) Chief Internal Auditor, Ms. Agyemang, promised to prioritize education, infrastructure, and youth empowerment. She urged cooperation and solidarity across political divides, stressing that progress necessitates teamwork.
She acknowledged that the public had high expectations and stated: “I am confident that we shall succeed with support from Central Government, our Member of Parliament, departmental heads, and well-meaning citizens.”
Additionally, she declared her intention to move forward with the process of elevating Atwima Kwanwoma to the status of a municipality and confirmed her readiness to collaborate with Kofi Amankwa-Manu, the Member of Parliament ( MP ), in order to achieve this objective.
Despite their differing political views, Hon. Amankwa-Manu, who was in attendance, praised the Assembly for the unanimous approval and promised the public that he would be willing to collaborate closely with the new DCE in order to improve the constituency.
