As the country prepares for the general election on December 7, Mr. Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh, the National Chairman for the National Media Commission, has urged the Ashanti Region’s media community to put the country’s unity and peace above their professional work and act in a way that does not undermine it.
Speaking to journalists at a media forum held in Ashanti Region ahead of December polls, Mr. Ayeboafoh urged them to uphold their fundamental responsibilities so as to prevent dishonest reporting and careless remarks prior to, during, and following the election from causing turmoil in the country.
” We cannot afford to sacrifice the nation through inaccuracy reporting and political personal interest “.
Mr. Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh went on to reaffirm that in order to assist calm the heated political climate, journalists must maintain objectivity and dedicate themselves to thorough and truthful reporting.
Mr. Kingsley Hope, the head of the Ashanti Regional Ghana Journalists Association ( GJA ), also took use of the opportunity to warn colleague journalists not to make accuracy their defining characteristic in order to undermine the integrity of the elections.
He pointed out that fake news is an issue that undermines journalists’ credibility. He did, however, exhort everyone to take action and report in a responsible manner in order to safeguard and maintain the tranquil environment the nation is currently experiencing.
Mr. Osei Nsiah, the director of the Ashanti Regional Electoral Commission, gave journalists an update on the organization’s readiness and reassured them that the EC is dedicated to holding a free, fair, and transparent election in the polls on December 7.
Journalists were informed by Mr. Nsiah that the keys to the office containing the election materials would not be accessible to anyone other than the EC Commissioner on December 5. “The only person, according to him, is the Inspector General of Police (IGP) untill the December 7” . Therefore, the people is being urged to maintain composure and resolve in order to have peaceful elections.
