The Aggrieved Teachers Association is demanding their long-overdue arrears of their salaries from the government. Led by President Opoku Foster, the association voiced their concerns and frustrations regarding the unfulfilled promises made by the current government.
The teachers recounted how during the 2016 elections, the government had promised to settle their arrears if they were elected into power. However, despite the change in leadership, the teachers have yet to receive the promised payments. The 2020 elections brought new hope when the government claimed that the funds had been disbursed to their accounts, only to discover that it was their salary arrears that had been settled, not their legacy arrears.
The teachers highlighted the disparity in payments, noting that only those recruited during the current government’s term (2016-2019) had received their dues, leaving out those who served from 2012 to 2015. This exclusion has caused particular distress to the 2015 year group, whose data has been inexplicably deleted from the system, making it impossible for them to access the funds owed to them.
Despite numerous assurances from government officials, including the director general, the teachers have yet to see any progress in resolving the issue. They lamented that the government’s communicators have falsely claimed that they have settled the arrears, misleading the public and adding to the teachers’ frustration.
President Opoku Foster expressed the association’s determination to receive their rightful payments before the end of the current government’s term. He stressed the urgency of reinstating the 2015 data and ensuring that all legacy arrears from 2012 to 2015 are settled promptly. The teachers warned that if the government continues to neglect their pleas, they will resort to demonstrations and picketing at the Jubilee House until their demands are met.
