President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to reform Ghana’s TV licence law, with the government considering replacing the current TV licence fee with a public media levy. The proposed changes, which are currently being discussed at the Cabinet level, aim to improve funding for public broadcasters and enhance revenue mobilisation.
Speaking during a visit to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) on Thursday, January 8, President Mahama explained that the new levy would have a broader scope, enabling the state to better support public media operations.

“There are a few suggestions we have with regard to the so-called TV licence. And I think that our thinking is going in the same direction to amend that law to make it a public media levy of some sort,” he said.

The President noted that stakeholder engagement, including consultations with GBC, will precede parliamentary submission. “When we’re ready, we’ll be discussing at Cabinet, but we’ll discuss with you what our thinking is before we finally go to Parliament and amend the law,” he added.

President Mahama expressed optimism about the impact of the reforms, stating: “I’m sure that with some of the suggestions we’ve got, you’ll be able to raise the amount of funding that it brings in and make it better able to do your work.”
The proposed changes are expected to enhance the funding and operations of public broadcasters in Ghana.
