The Ghana SDG Smart Cities Program’s District Implementation Committee (DIC) was formally launched by Kumasi Mayor Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, also referred to as King Zuba. This important step will help the city move closer to a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future.
A wide range of important stakeholders, including government authorities, academics, civil society actors, and development partners, were present at the inaugural ceremony, which was held at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Conference Hall Auditorium.
The Ghana SDG Smart Cities Program, which is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN, is expected to conclude on December 31, 2026.
Mayor King Zuba, who stated that Kumasi is prepared to take the lead in intelligent and sustainable urban administration, reiterated the Assembly’s unwavering support for the initiative in his keynote address.
“I would like to reassure you that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is committed to seeing this program through to its completion.” “Kumasi has the potential to become a beacon of creativity, inclusivity, and sustainability.”
The Mayor called on the committee to embrace its duties with enthusiasm, creativity, and responsibility, stressing the crucial role it will play in determining the initiative’s success.
“The success of this revolutionary program depends on the newly appointed members of the District Implementation Committee. Allow your behaviour to embody the principles of cooperation, creativity, and openness that guide the SDGs,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) lecturer Mr. Prince Aboagye Anokye thanked the Assembly for their trust and faith. He promised the committee’s undivided attention to accomplishing the program’s objectives. “We feel incredibly honoured to have been given this responsibility,” Mr. Anokye said. “The committee is prepared and committed to living up to the high standards set for us. Additionally, we urge the people to fully support us as we collaborate to change Kumasi.
The goal of the Ghana SDG Smart Cities Programme is to expedite the local adoption of sustainable development techniques by integrating inclusive planning, smart technologies, and creative urban solutions. The District Implementation Committee’s establishment marks a significant advancement in Kumasi’s efforts to improve the city’s governance and citizens’ quality of life.
