The National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has expressed grave reservations over the hasty competition for the party’s 2028 flagbearer post, just three months into President John Dramani Mahama’s term.

On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Asiedu Nketiah spoke on Accra FM, describing the early lobbying as risky and inappropriate. He warned that it may divert the president’s attention and impede the party’s advancement.

“President Mahama will find it extremely challenging to focus in such a situation. The unity and concentration of our party are seriously jeopardized by such premature rivalry,” he stated.

He emphasized that President Mahama’s performance in office has a direct impact on the NDC’s future prospects.

He asserted that regardless of who ultimately leads the party into the next election, any failure on the part of the president could harm the party’s reputation and chances of winning.

“How can the president concentrate on carrying out his mandate if, in less than three months, people are already arguing over who should be our next flagbearer?” He asked.

He also issued a warning, saying that if the pattern keeps up, internal conflicts could cause the NDC to lose badly in subsequent elections.

“Even if someone is forced to be the flagbearer, the party may reject it if we don’t take care and President Mahama fails,” he continued.

“We have to stay focused and together. Such rivalry will occur, but not just now.
