On Sunday, November 17, 2024, two rural telephony sites in the Ashanti Region were put into service by Mrs. Eva Andoh-Poku, the Administrator for Ghana Investment Fund For Electronic Communication ( GIFEC ), under the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation.
This marks a key milestone for Ghana’s digital growth.
The Ghana Rural Telephony and Digital Inclusion Projects include the Kensere and Ntroaku locations in the Bekwai Municipality in Ashanti Region.
Mrs. Eva Andoh-Poku, who commissioned the sites, proposed that 1,008 of the 2,016 rural telephone sites being constructed by GIFEC as part of the Ghana Rural Telephony & Digital Inclusion Project (GRT&DIP) have been completed, connecting approximately 1.5 million people and providing mobile network coverage for approximately 3.4 million people.
However, solar energy powers about 900 of the 2,016 installations.
According to Mrs. Andoh-Poku, GRT&DIP aims to increase the reach of mobile phone service to places with limited access and where licensed operators have been reluctant or unable to grow because of financial or other limitations.
Although telecommunications have expanded greatly, the Administrator pointed out that telephone infrastructure is still mostly located in important economic hubs.
For simple connectivity across the country, this necessitates giving telecommunication and ICT facilities top priority.
She consequently tasked the populace with safeguarding and preserving the current investments in recipient communities for long-term communal benefits, as they are typical Ghanaians with a maintenance culture deficit.
